## What resurfacing a tennis court means

Resurfacing rebuilds the acrylic playing surface on top of your existing slab. We pressure clean the court, repair cracks and low spots, apply a sanded acrylic resurfacer to restore texture, then two or more pigmented color coats, then fresh regulation striping. The foundation you already paid for stays where it is, and you get a new court to play on.

A tennis court is a big piece of ground. The playing area alone is 36 by 78 feet, and a properly fenced court runs 60 by 120. That is roughly eight times the surface of a pickleball court, and it changes the job in three ways: it costs more because there is more to coat, it takes longer, and it gives the slab underneath far more room to move.

![Resurfaced two-tone green and red HOA tennis courts in Las Vegas, NV with fresh white striping](https://onpointcourtsurfacing.com/_astro/tennis-court-hoa-childrens-memorial-las-vegas-after.DZ-gdlSI_ZEghOF.webp)

**Cost, single court:** $6,000 to $15,000

**Resurface interval:** 5 to 8 years

**Court out of play:** 3 to 7 days

**Acrylic color coats:** 2 or more

**Regulation layout:** 36 ft x 78 ft, doubles

**Written quote:** Free, itemized

## Tennis courts wear from the baseline in

On a pickleball court the wear lands in the kitchen. On a tennis court it lands behind the baseline, because that is where the feet are. Players slide, stop and push off in the same two strips of court for years, while the service boxes see a fraction of that traffic.

That is why a tennis court often looks fine from the fence and still needs work. Stand on the baseline and look along the surface toward the net. If the texture in the back six feet reads smoother than the mid-court, the sand in the coating has worn through where it matters most, and grip has gone with it.

It also means the court usually gets a longer life than a pickleball court of the same age under the same use. Five to eight years is the normal interval in Southern Nevada. Club and school courts under daily play sit at the short end. A backyard court played at weekends can reach the long end and occasionally beyond it.

## Six signs your court is due

Walk the court and check these. Any two together usually means it is time.

### The baseline has gone slick

Run a hand across the back of the court, then across a service box. If the baseline feels smooth and the service box still has grit, the coating has worn through where the play is. That is a footing problem before it is a looks problem.

### Color has faded unevenly

Nevada sun bleaches acrylic from the top down, and it does it fastest on the side of the court that takes the afternoon light. Blotchy fade, chalk on your shoes, or a court that reads as two different greens in low sun all mean the pigment layer is spent.

### Cracks are following the same line

Fine crazing in the coating is normal and repairable. A crack that has opened enough to catch a fingernail, or that runs straight across the court in one continuous line, is telling you about the slab underneath rather than the paint on top.

### Water sits after rain

A court should sheet dry. Puddles that come back in the same spots are low areas. Shallow ones can be filled during a resurface. Deeper ones mean grinding, and sometimes they mean the court needs regrading rather than recoating.

### The bounce is dead in patches

Bounce a ball at both baselines, both service boxes and the center. A noticeably duller bounce in one area means the coating has thinned or lost its bond there, and it spreads outward from wherever it started.

### Lines are ghosting or lifting

Line paint sits on top of the color coats, so it fails first. Lines flaking at the edges usually mean the coating beneath them has let go, not that the striping was done badly.

The coating system

## What is actually going on the court

An acrylic tennis court surface is a layered system, not a coat of paint. Each layer does a different job, and a resurface that fails early is almost always one where a layer was left out.

**Crack repair and patching comes first.** Static cracks filled and feathered, shallow low spots ground back or filled so water sheets off instead of pooling. On a court this size there is usually more of this than the owner expects.

**Sanded acrylic resurfacer is the body of the system.** Silica sand suspended in acrylic rebuilds the texture that gives the court its grip and sets its playing speed. This is the layer that wears out, and it is the layer skipped when a quote comes in suspiciously low.

**Pigmented color coats, two or more,** carry the color and the final texture. Court speed is set here: more sand plays slower, less plays faster. We will ask what you want before it goes down.

**Regulation striping goes on last,** measured and squared on site against the net line rather than traced off the lines that were already there.

## Repair, resurface, or rebuild

Three different jobs at three very different prices. Working out which one you need is most of the value of a site visit.

| | Spot repair | Full resurface | Reconstruction |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| When it applies | Court is sound, one area has failed | Every 5 to 8 years, slab still sound | Slab heaving, settling, or cracks still moving |
| What happens | Cracks filled and feathered, low spot ground back, failed patch cut out and rebuilt | Clean, repair, sanded acrylic resurfacer, two or more color coats, fresh regulation striping | Base addressed first, then the full surface system |
| Court out of play | Days | 3 to 7 days plus cure time | Weeks |
| Cost, single court | A fraction of a resurface | $6,000 to $15,000 | Approaches new construction, $105,000 to $165,000 |
| Fixes drainage? | Shallow low spots only | Shallow low spots only | Yes, the court is regraded |
| Fixes moving cracks? | No | No | Yes |

## What a resurface will not fix

Coating is 3 to 5 millimeters thick. It cannot bridge a slab that is moving, and it will not regrade a court that does not drain.

A crack that is still working will telegraph through new coating in the same line, usually within a season or two of Nevada temperature swings. Standing water will still stand. A slab that has settled at a joint will still have a lip you can feel through your shoes.

Tennis courts are more exposed to this than smaller courts simply because of their size. A 60 by 120 footprint sits on a lot of ground, and in Southern Nevada that ground is caliche and expansive soil that moves with moisture. More slab means more joint length, more edge, and more opportunity for the base to shift.

Resurfacing a court in that condition is money spent twice. We would rather tell you at the quote than after your new surface cracks in the same line.

## Brian Foley, Owner & Installer

On Point holds a surfacing license (0090686) and a concrete license (0095035). That is why the assessment above is worth something. Most surfacing crews can only tell you about the coating. We pour slabs too, including post-tension slabs built for desert soil, so we can tell you whether your problem is the coating or the ground underneath it.

Brian Foley owns On Point and is on site for the work. He played number-one singles at Boise State on a full-ride scholarship and later competed professionally in pickleball, so he also knows what a worn baseline does to your footing, not just what it looks like from the fence.

On Point is a member of the American Sports Builders Association.

While the court is closed

## The cheapest time to change anything

Color comes from the pigmented coats going on anyway, so a new palette costs no more than repeating the old one. Two-tone color blocking, a painted logo, a club or HOA mark, and a full change of scheme are all effectively free at resurface time and expensive at any other time.

It is also the moment to add pickleball. Putting pickleball lines on a tennis court is the most requested striping job in the valley, and doing it during a resurface costs a fraction of what it costs as a separate visit. One pickleball court fits across the middle of a standard tennis court, or up to four across the full footprint. See [court line striping](https://onpointcourtsurfacing.com/court-line-striping) for how the layouts work and the difference between blended and contrast lines.

If you are weighing a resurface against a new court, [tennis court construction](https://onpointcourtsurfacing.com/sports/tennis) covers what a new build involves.

## Running more than one court?

Per-court pricing drops with the number of courts in a single mobilization, and we phase the work so the facility never fully closes. We have resurfaced four courts at Darling Tennis Center and worked on the courts at TPC Summerlin and DragonRidge Country Club. [Commercial court resurfacing](https://onpointcourtsurfacing.com/commercial/repair-resurfacing) covers how HOA, club, school and park projects are scoped, scheduled and quoted.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much does it cost to resurface a tennis court in Las Vegas?

A standard acrylic resurface of a single tennis court runs $6,000 to $15,000. Where you land depends on how much crack repair and patching the slab needs first, whether you are changing colors, and how many courts we can do in one mobilization. Multi-court facilities cost less per court.

### How often does a tennis court need resurfacing?

Every 5 to 8 years in Southern Nevada. Club and school courts under daily play sit at the short end of that range. A backyard court played at weekends can reach the long end. Nevada sun and caliche soil both push courts toward the shorter interval than the same court would need in a milder climate.

### What does a resurface actually include?

Pressure cleaning, crack and low-spot repair, a sanded acrylic resurfacer to rebuild texture, two or more pigmented acrylic color coats, and fresh regulation striping. The result is a new playing surface bonded to your existing slab.

### What will a resurface not fix?

Anything structural. If the slab is heaving, settling, or has cracks that are still moving, new coating will crack again in the same places within a season or two. Standing water from bad grading does not go away either. Those courts need repair or reconstruction first, and we will tell you which one you are looking at before you spend money on coating.

### How long is the court out of play?

Usually 3 to 7 days of work in warm weather, then cure time before play. A tennis court takes longer than a smaller court simply because there is more surface to coat. For multi-court facilities we can phase the work so some courts stay open.

### Can you add pickleball lines while you resurface?

Yes, and it is by far the cheapest time to do it. The lines go on during the striping stage that is happening anyway. One pickleball court fits across the middle of a standard tennis court, or up to four using the full footprint. We can stripe them blended into the court color so tennis players barely notice them, or in contrast color if pickleball is becoming the main use.

### Can I change the court colors?

Yes, and like the pickleball lines it is cheapest during a resurface. Color is set by the pigmented acrylic coats going on regardless, so a new palette costs no more than repeating the old one. It is also the moment for two-tone color blocking or a painted club logo.

### Do you resurface clay or grass courts?

No. On Point builds and resurfaces acrylic hard courts and cushioned acrylic only. Neither clay nor grass suits the desert climate, and we do not install surfaces we would not recommend.
